Why It Is Important To Write To Ones Younger Self - Tyler Perry

Ace filmmaker and actor Tyler Perry turned 50 a few days ago and has now taken to social media to pen an open letter to his 5-year-old self.

According to Tyler, this is necessary as it helps one heal from whatever pain they may have endured growing up.

In his letter, he said;

Dear 5 year old me,

May I just say, “Thank you” to the little boy that I was. Thank you for all you went through to allow me to be the man I am today. I love you, and I am so thankful to God that you survived. Even when I didn’t want to, your pureness and innocence ushered me here. Thank you for these 50 years. I love you. We made it.

What would you say to your younger self? This is just one paragraph of many pages that I’ve written to my younger self over the years.

I often tell friends to write a letter to their younger self. I promise you, it will change your life.

If you can get through it, you should try it. It can be so healing.

Love y’all.

Guess you can see I’m still celebrating a very young 50, lol.

Tyler has in an interview with Oprah spoken on how his father abused him as a child.

“That’s hard for me to look at. I feel like I died as a child.”

To endure the violent beatings, the ace filmmaker said he would his imagination to escape.

“I could go to this park [in my mind] that my mother and my aunt had taken me to. … I’m there in this park running and playing, and it was such a good day,” he says. “So, every time somebody was doing something to me that was horrible, that was awful, I could go to this park in my mind until it was over.”

One particular beating by his father, Tyler said;

“To this day, I don’t know why he did it. But I remember him cornering me in a room and hitting me with this vacuum cleaner cord. He would just not stop. There are all these welts on [me], the flesh that’s coming from my bone, and I had to wait for him to go to sleep. When he fell asleep, I ran to my aunt’s house, and she was mortified when she saw it.
