What to Know About The Terrifying Momo Challenge

The current trend of ‘challenges’ springing up everywhere on social media has seen different ones come and go just this year alone. From the #10YearsChallenge to the current #ResurrectionChallenge, we have seen several trends come and go. However, the most terrifying and annoying of them all is the so called “Momo Challenge”.

This challenge doesn’t exactly follow the pattern that other challenges have been following. It can be more described as a wide spread meme sharing ‘craze’. The problem with this ‘craze’ though, is the picture/meme that is being shared.

The strange image is being shared on social media, especially on Whatsapp, with several types of terrifying messages including threats. The chilling image is even being used by criminals to carry out malicious attacks on unsuspecting innocents and children.

 The Image

Although much is not known about the image – currently referred to as Momo, we can tell you that it isn’t anything supernatural.

The original image started out as the picture of a sculpture made for an art exhibition in Japan, three years ago. However, the original image was slightly distorted before it started its terrifying rounds. Since it started circulating on social media, several myths and supernatural origins have been attached to it. The origin of its name, Momo, is also not known.

However, what you should know is that the image is not a myth or anything supernatural. It is just the product of some people looking for ways to scare others unnecessarily. It has actually been linked to some deaths and used to terrify children. The UK police have issued a warning to parents to watch out for their children and protect them from this distasteful ‘momo challenge’.

And as much as Nigerians like jumping on trends, this particular trend has not made it in the country. We do not fancy horror yh?

But still, watch out for the Momo Challenge!
