Last weekend was an exciting one in the world of football. Liverpool went back on top of the English League while Manchester City qualified for the F.A Cup Final and Arsenal fell to yet another away loss. Also, Watford incredibly came from 2-0 down to win their F.A Cup semi-final match against Wolverhampton Wanderers by 3 goals to 2. However, one of the main taking points of the weekend was Arsenal’s inability to get points away from home this season. It is one shameful record the North London team has managed to get for themselves this season. And here are 5 other top shameful moments in English football.
- Chelsea 2015/16 Title Defense

Chelsea won the English Premier League in the 2014/15 season and went into the following season on a high. However, the champions started the new season in a torrid way, capitulating mid-season by sacking their coach, Jose Mourinho. Although the experienced Guus Hiddink was brought in to help the club, Chelsea couldn’t recover and ended the season in 10th position. They set a shameful record of the worst Premier League title defense in history.

Back when Manchester United was still the strongest club out of Manchester, City did the unthinkable. On the 23rd of October, 2011, United suffered one of their worst defeats at home. And more humiliatingly, the loss came in the hands of their bitter rivals, Manchester City. In what Sir Alex Fergusson described as his worst result ever, City beat United 6-1 at the Old Trafford. A real shameful moment in their history.
- Arsenal’s Destruction At Old Trafford

In the same 2011, a few months before their huge loss to Manchester city, United had done one on Arsenal. Arsenal had just lost two of their main players, Fabregas and Nasri, and hoped to regain the fans’ backing by defeating United at old Trafford. However, Arsenal was stunned and were handed an embarrassing 8-2 defeat away from home. The Gunners looked stunned for most of the match period as they were torn apart by the ruthless Man U players. Even though Arsenal fans 8-2 remember it, it’s a shameful record that would always be in their history.
- The Infamous Gerrard Slip

Other than this season, Liverpool have had a decent run for the title in the past too. In 2014, Liverpool were in pole position to win the league after they had gone 11 matches unbeaten. They needed just one more win to have one hand on the trophy. But right in the middle of the must-win match against Chelsea, Captain Steven Gerrard slipped and gave the ball away in dangerous position. Chelsea forward, Demba Ba pounced and scored for the “Blues” and Liverpool couldn’t find their way back into the match. Gerrard said after the match:
“That one moment will always hurt me until the day I die”

Arsenal definitely had a 2011 to forget. Before their humiliation at Old Trafford, they had suffered a bigger disgrace earlier in the year. February 27, 2011 saw Arsenal face a relegation-threatened Birmingham City in the Carabao Cup (formerly referred to as League Cup) final match. The match was finely poised at 1-1 until a mix-up between Arsenal defender, Laurent Koscienly and keeper, Szczeny allowed Birmingham take the lead just seconds to the full time whistle. Arsenal was stunned and watched in shame as Birmingham won the trophy.
