Chucky is a possessed doll on a mission to wreak bloody havoc on its owner and anyone who crosses its path. This character stands out from other horror movie villains because of its sense of humour which balances its sinister nature.
9. Regan Macneil (aka Pazuzu), The Exorcist Franchise
In the history of horror movies, no movie has depicted demon possession quite as well as The Exorcist. From a shy, seemingly normal 12-year-old girl, Regan Macneil goes through a horrific transformation that sees her completely possessed by the demon Pazuzu. From spitting out green vomit to spider walking and levitating, Regan, who is under the influence of Pazuzu, engages in several paranormal acts. The makeup effects used in The Exorcist are so disturbing that some audience members literally ran out of the cinemas when it showed in the 70’s.
8. Freddy Krueger, A Nightmare on Elm Street
The best thing about nightmares is that they eventually end and we wake up to reality. Right? Well, for Freddy Krueger, this is not the case at all. This child killer preys on his victims in the realm of dreams. Freddy Krueger is another horror movie villain who cracks jokes while ripping humans apart.

Inspired by the American serial killer Ed Gein, Leatherface is a cannibalistic killer who wears a mask made of human skin and wields a chainsaw. Though his motivation for killing people is not clear, one thing that is certain is that Leatherface won’t stop until he has slaughtered his targets gruesomely. This is one character who is simple in appearance yet utterly terrifying.
4. Pennywise, It
Even though you are not normally scared of clowns, you would have a rethink after watching the movie It. Pennywise is not just any clown. He is an otherworldly entity who takes up the form of a clown so he can easily lure and murder children. That’s not all. He can also appear in a variety of other forms including as a leper or a headless boy. Yikes!
3. The Entity, It Follows
In horror films, sex usually signifies that something bad is about to happen. But It Follow takes things a step further with its portrayal of an entity that is passed from one person to another during sexual intercourse. Jay, the central character of the film, gets infected by this entity and her life becomes a living hell. The entity, which only Jay can see, follows her wherever she goes and wouldn’t stop until she is dead.
What makes this entity so unnerving is that it can take the shape of anyone including people you know. If you’re about to see this movie for the first time, get prepared because it will have you thinking everyone you see is a sex demon who is out to hunt you, for days after you watch it.
2. Jason Voorhees, Friday the 13th
Like Leatherface, Jason Voorhees is so iconic that he doesn’t need much costume or makeup to conjure up terror. With his signature hockey mask and machete, you would know he means business.

What’s more terrifying than someone who murders his sister on Halloween night when he was just six years old? As if that’s not enough, he returns to haunt the town of Haddonfield, killing everyone in his path. Michael Myers is unstoppable, relentless, and determined in carrying out his gruesome acts and with just a knife and a face mask, he executes them so well.
