Tiwa Savage: 5 facts about Nigeria’s Music Queen

Sometimes referred to as the ‘Queen Bee’ of Nigeria’s music industry, Tiwatope Savage-Balogun is one of the biggest artists to come out of Africa. Since this talented songstress broke into the Nigerian music scene in 2010, she has given us several hits that have enjoyed massive success nationally and all around the continent.

On Monday, February 5th, Tiwa Savage celebrated her 39^th birthday – which is absolutely incredible to me for someone still looking so young, beautiful and sexy. Anyways, to mark this day, here are 5 facts about Tiwa Savage:

1. She started out as an International Artist.

Tiwa Savage's vocals were used in Whitney Houston's 2009 album, I Look To You. She sang backup vocals for Kelly Clarkson, Mary J. Blige, Chaka Chan. She's a Sony Music Songwriter and wrote songs for Kat De Luna, Fantasia, Mya, Jacko. Jay-Z also signed her to ROC Nation.

Tiwa didn’t start her amazing career here in Nigeria. She started out far away in the U.S at the young age of 16 by doing vocals for top artists like mary J Blige, Kelly Clarkson, Andrea Bucelli, George Micheal and Chaka Chan. She also sang as a backup in Whitney Houston’s 2009 album “I Look To You”.

This gifted singer has always known that her calling was in music. She even auditioned, qualified and made it to the final 24 in the UK version of the singing reality show X-Factor in 2006.

3. She was a Banker

After getting her Business Administration degree for the University of Kent, Tiwa went on to work for a while at the Royal Bank of Scotland. She also studied music and got her degree form the prestigious Berklee College of Music.

Tiwa Savage is actually multi talented. This award winning singer showed her acting talents when she appeared in a stage adaptation of Tyler Perry’s “For Colored Girls” alongside Nollywood icons like Iretiola Doyle and Joke Siva.

Tiwa savage is the first African female artist to be associated with the pepsi brand as an ambassador. She is also the first Nigerian female artiste to sign for Jay Z’s Roc Nation and last year, she became the first Nigerian female artist to win the MTV Europe Music Awards when she beat other nominees to win the Best African Act category.
