Fighting germs starts with researching your hotel and the rooms before you book it. Check the reviews and if you see some phrases like those below describing the room, you’ll be more likely to end up with a nice clean room.
- Newly built hotel
- Newly renovated
- Modern furnishings
- Clean looking room
In general, if most of the reviews are favorable you’ll be okay but keep in mind that every hotel will have a bad review or two because you cannot please everyone no matter how hard you try. Look at what the majority of people(60% and above) are saying about the hotel.

These are the Top 5 Dirtiest Things In A Hotel Room
- The TV remote–this will probably be the grossest thing in the room because it is been handled a lot and it’ll be rare for housekeeping to take the remote and wipe it down. The best way to clean this is with a wipe. You can get the ones that have antiseptic in it and can kill of any bacteria that has made the remote its home. An added benefit is it’ll still be relatively clean for the next person who lodges into that room.
- The headboard and bedspread–The bed sheets will get washed in between each customer by housekeeping but have you ever thought of the bedspread? Oh lord. Those things are usually kept in the room and only cleaned or washed when absolutely necessary since they’re harder to wash. In fact, they usually do not get washed unless there is an apparent spill on it so do not bank on them being clean because most of the time they won’t be
- All doorknobs–If you think the TV Remote is filthy and infected, then think about the doorknobs. Everyone and anyone touches that thing and you must be joking if you think housekeeping wipes the doorknob when they are done cleaning the room.
- The entire toilet– There’s a silver lining here, the toilet actually gets some form of attention as regards cleaning. It is washed with ordinary soap and then flushed. And we all know that is usually not enough when it comes to the toilet bowl and especially the seat. So you might want to get some basic antiseptic spray for that toilet when you lodge into the hotel
- Counter and sink in the bathroom–This too receives attention and I will not lie. But do you think it is really really clean? Let us leave it
- Flip Flops aka Bathroom Slippers–Bring your own pair of flip-flops to wear when walking on the floor of a hotel room, a hotel room floor is probably the most disgusting surface of them all. Never walk on a hotel room floor with your bare feet, please.
