Snapchat in a bid to improve its business prospects in this period of slowing audience growth, has decided to expand by gaming. The photo-interactive social networking platform has been slowly adding in more interactive features and games. Snapchat now has a complete range of AR games, or ‘Snappables’, which you can play alone or with friends.
However, according to a new report from Cheddar, Snapchat will now have a dedicated gaming platform. This dedicated platform will have a series of different games from outside developers that are designed specifically to work in the app.
The first time we heard about this kind of gaming platform was back in 2017, when Tencent – a Chinese giant tech company acquired a 10% stake in Snap Inc. Rumors then started going around that Tencent would be looking to work with the company on developing mobile games. Tencent is the largest gaming company in the world by revenue.
This step would make perfect sense for Snapchat, given that the app has a younger user base that would definitely focus more on its gaming content. It could also open up opportunities to generate major revenue through in-game purchases or advertising.
This report comes after Facebook had, last week, announced their new, dedicated tab for games in the main navigation bar for some users. Snapchat obviously doesn’t want to get left behind and are now ready to also tap into the growing gaming market. The mobile gaming sector is projected to generate around 52% of the $152 billion gaming industry in 2019.
