Scientists Discover New Bacteria That Eats Pollution

A team of researchers from Washington State University have reported that they made a stunning discovery. This team claimed to have discovered a special kind of bacteria that consumes pollution at the Yellowstone National Park. According to the team, the discovery could be the beginning of the end of the environmental pollution problems in the world. And quite rightly so.

In the reports which they released as a paper, the team, led by a Washington State University’s graduate student, stumbled upon their discovery while searching for life within the hot springs and geysers around Yellowstone. They described how they came upon their discovery.

While on their search last August, they came across four crystal clear pools of hot water several miles into the Heart Lake Geyser Basin. Surprised at their find, the scientists submerged a few electrodes on the edge of the water and left it there for more than one month – to confirm the presence of any microorganism in the pools.

When the team leader, Abderlrhman Mohamed and his team went back for their electrodes 32 days later, they had made their discovery. According to Mohamed, this is the first time the bacteria has been found thriving in such harsh conditions. The paper stated  that the temperature of the pools were between 110 – 200 degrees Fahrenheit.

The bacteria they found are allegedly capable of absorbing pollution by converting toxic pollutants into less harmful substances. They are also capable of generating electricity in the process. The newly discovered bacteria offer a potential solution to two of the world’s greatest problems – pollution and sources of sustainable power.
