No More Revenge Porn On Facebook

Social media giants, Facebook, have announced its new efforts to detect and remove any form of ‘non-consensual intimate images’, or revenge porn in its apps. Facebook intends to use advanced machine learning to spot and take care of such content faster to better protect its victims.

In a statement released, Facebook stated:

“By using machine learning and artificial intelligence, we can now proactively detect near-nude images or videos that are shared without permission on Facebook and Instagram. This means we can find this content before anyone reports it, which is important for two reasons: often victims are afraid of retribution so they are reluctant to report the content themselves, or they are unaware the content has been share.”

According to Facebook, the addition of this option has gotten a lot of praises and positive reactions from victims and support organizations. The social media company first launched a pilot program on this same issue in 2017 which enabled users to submit their photos to Facebook and then Facebook’s digital team used them to create ‘digital fingerprints’ for the future identification of such kind of pictures. Although it received a lot of backlash bin 2017, this option has now been accepted as a positive step and will now be released for all users.

The company will also be launching a new element in its Safety Center whose focus will be primarily to provide support for revenge porn victims. As per Facebook:

“Here victims can find organizations and resources to support them, including steps they can take to remove the content from our platform and prevent it from being spread further – and they can access our pilot program. We’re also going to make it easier and more intuitive for victims to report when their intimate images are shared on Facebook. And over the coming months, we’ll build a victim support toolkit to give people around the world more information with locally and culturally relevant support.”

Revenge porn has now been recognized as a menace and one of the emotionally traumatizing forms of oppression. With studies showing that up to 51% of revenge porn victims becoming suicidal, this move by Facebook is a welcome and highly commendable one.
