Alcohol is the 4th macro-nutrient but is non-essential and contains no nutritional value.
It has seven calories per gram. It can often contribute to malnutrition because of the amount of calories taken in of alcohol can account for a large percentage of your daily requirements. It does not always mean only drinking in excess can cause this even one alcoholic drink a day can contribute to malnutrition.
Your body cannot store alcohol so it must be metabolized right away however it can have a detrimental effect on other metabolic processes in your body. Before you visit that bar after work please think about this. When you consume alcohol your body makes metabolizing it a priority over all the other metabolic processes.
Your body sends alcohol to the liver which produces the enzymes needed for oxidation and metabolism of alcohol. Your body won’t metabolize sugars and fats as efficiently during the metabolism of alcohol and if you drink often it can cause your metabolism to slow down which can cause weight gain.
Maintaining adequate blood sugar levels is one of the most key functions of your metabolism but when you consume alcohol maintaining those blood sugar levels is the first thing that gets moved aside in your body’s rush to dispose the toxins in your body as efficiently as possible. Alcohol inhibits your body’s ability to form glucose and maintain healthy levels of it in the blood. Even occasional alcohol consumption can be dangerous especially on an empty stomach and especially for diabetics and hypoglycemic.
Not only does alcohol have no nutritional value but it can affect the absorption of nutrients and vitamins from the foods you eat because alcohol irritates the gastrointestinal tract. Also alcohol is toxic to your liver and over a long time of drinking can cause serious health issues.
