Of course, being buried alive is not something that is so common these days. Gone are the days when people had a higher chance of being buried alive due to the lack of medical equipment we have today. Several people have been buried alive in history and only few people have lived to tell the story.
So, what if by some cruel twist of fate, you find yourself buried six feet underground, trapped in your own coffin, and with no clue on how to get out? Of course, you would wonder what you ever did to your village people to deserve this kind of treatment and you would be completely pissed at your doctor for misdiagnosing you. But wait! You don’t have time for all this. You’ve just woken up in a mess that people hardly get out of and your oxygen is already running out.
So, what do you do? Perhaps, with these tips below and some luck on your side, you’ll live to tell the story and become a passionate creator of coffins in which people can escape from if they ever found themselves in this kind of situation (forgive my wild imagination!)
Let’s get to it!
Keep Calm!
Of course, this is easier said than done. Waking up in a coffin six feet underground means you’re likely about to die a prolonged and uncomfortable death. You’re inside a tight coffin where you can’t sit up or stand so you will understandably be scared to death. While it seems hard, it’s possible to control your feelings even in situations such as this. So, if you see that you’re panicking, recognise it, focus on your breath and try to turn your attention to what’s happening to you. If, like anyone would, you’re terrified of ever falling into this grim situation, you can start practising breathing exercises. These breathing exercises can help you calm down and will also help conserve air.
Feel The Environment Around You
If you find yourself in this kind of situation, you can’t be picky. Any tool you find can end up being helpful. So, it’s best if you start checking around to see if you can find anything particularly useful. Although the chances are low that you’ve been buried with any useful object, you just can never know. Start checking to see whether you’re wearing a belt. The buckle could be helpful since it is a hard metallic object. Check if you’re wearing some cufflinks, jewelry, or anything hard enough to break through. And if by some incredibly low chance, you have a cellphone on you, thank your ancestors and start calling immediately. And for the love of God, pray you’re not using one of those horrible networks (cough cough).
Start Hitting The Lid Of The Coffina
Using any object you can get hold of or your own fists, start tapping the lid of the coffin like your life depends on it (well, doesn’t it though?). Don’t count on it that anyone would be able to hear you since you’re six feet underground but chances are you may have been buried in a shallow grave by some Russian Mafia boss. If so, someone may just hear you and dig you out from the grave.

Control Your Breathing
If you really want to increase your chances of getting out, then it is important to note that you should conserve your air by calming down and taking slow, deliberate breaths. Although it depends on the size of the coffin, your own size and how calm you are, science suggests that a healthy adult would have about five to eight hours of breathable air if in a situation like this. So, try to calm down and breathe steadily so as not to quickly use up all the oxygen.
It Is Time To Get Out!
If you’ve been hitting the coffin for help and you’re sure no no one is coming to save you, it is safe to say that it is time to dig your way out. You would have to break through the coffin lid so pray to god that it is made of wood and not steel or else, you’re dead. First thing first, put a fabric around your head and tie it tightly. This will protect you from inhaling dust and increase your chances of survival. Now, hit the lid of the coffin at the centre with your leg and avoid using your hands. As soon as it breaks, use the side of your head to push it open and start scraping your way through. If you’re lucky enough, you might just get out alive. People have actually survived this way before. For instance, the Huffington Post reported in 2013 that a man from Brazil dug his way out of his own shallow grave after being involved in a fight.
