Global Warming Could Make The Clouds Disappear

According to a recent climate study, the current rate of global warming could cause the stratocumulus clouds to disappear from our atmosphere in less than 100 years.

The adverse effects of global warming on our world cannot be overemphasized. A few weeks ago, the first mammal species to go extinct because of Global Warming, Bramble Cay Melomys, was reported by the Australian government. Furthermore, this adverse effect of climate change is threatening to be the cause of the next mass extinction that would wipe out all life on the planet.  But before it even begins to do all that, global warming could actually cause some of the clouds to disappear.

As a result of human activities, more CO2 and other greenhouse gases are being pumped into the atmosphere. And this does not go well with the clouds. According to NASA, the atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration has increased from about 200-280 parts per million (ppm) before the industrial revolution to 400 ppm in 2013. And they also say the current CO2 atmospheric levels are the highest ever seen in the last 50 million years!

If the Earth’s atmospheric CO2 levels continue to increase at this rate, scientists say it will reach 1200 ppm within a century and when it does, stratocumulus clouds will break-up and disappear. Stratocumulus clouds are low-altitude, blanket-like clouds that are found over subtropical oceans. The clouds help to make sure the planet remains cool.

However, scientists ran a climate experiment and found out that when CO2 levels reached 1200 ppm, the stratocumulus clouds started to disintegrate and disappear. They also discovered that those high CO2 levels also caused an increase in the Earth’s surface temperature, making life almost unliveable. And all these things could happen within the next 100 years.

The only thing we can do to prevent this is to take measures to slow down global warming. Make sure you find ways to make your activities more environmental friendly. Remember, the clouds depend on it too.
