Eggs are one of the cheapest sources of protein that is readily available in Nigeria and which forms part of the regular staples in many homes.
However, the negative hype around egg being a source of high cholesterol has generally caused people to become skeptical of its goodness. A recent research reveals that eating eggs regularly is not directly responsible for high blood cholesterol. It is common to hear that kids will be prone to Type 2 diabetes when they grow up if they take eggs regularly.
However, these fears can not become real if you stay within the limit of what your kids should take in daily. An average egg contains approximately 183mg of cholesterol and a child needs cholesterol intake should be less than 300mg daily. So eating an egg once, a day is healthy for your child.
Egg contains lots of nutrients that are highly beneficial to the growth of your child. Some of which are choline, Folate, Lutein and Zeaxanthin, Niacin, Omega-3 fats, Protein, Riboflavin, Vitamin A, Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Vitamin E, Zinc.
However, how do you identify fresh eggs?
You can identify fresh eggs that are still edible by using this time-tested method.
- Put the egg in a container of water.
- If the egg bent on the side at the bottom, it shows it is still fresh
- If the egg stands straight on the bottom, it shows that if you do not eat it on time it could go bad.
- If the egg floats at the top, then you should throw it away
As nutritious as eggs are, you must be careful in preparing it to avoid salmonella poisoning. This bacteria is usually found in a normal egg and it becomes dangerous when your egg is not cooked properly or when it is taken raw. So to prevent this, do the following
- Buy fresh eggs with shell
- Avoid giving a soft, raw or slightly cooked egg to your kids
- Ensure that you boil your egg well before eating
