Did You Know Dogs Can Recognise A Bad Person? Science Says So

For a long time, dogs have been hailed as man’s best friend. They are loyal, smart, and are always ready to defend their owners. But did you know that dogs may be smarter than you even thought?

In the past, a lot of studies have shown that dogs can sense human emotion. Well, recent research has even found that dogs can tell when a person is being untrustworthy or mean.

Here is exactly what the research found.

Can Dogs Recognise A Bad Person?

Well, the answer is yes according to a team led by Akiko Takaoka of Kyoto University in Japan. The team conducted a study to find out whether dogs could tell whether a person is lying or not. The study involved dog owners pointing to containers with food in it. For a long time, people have known that if you point at an object, a dog will run to it. So, the researchers used this knowledge in their experiment. During the study, dog owners pointed at a container with food in it, and the dogs ran towards the container. Again, they pointed at another container without food, and the dogs ran towards them as well. But by the third time, they discovered something astonishing.

When the dog owners pointed at a container containing food this time around, the dogs refused to run towards it. The dogs were now aware that the people pointing to the containers were not reliable due to their previous experience. Interestingly, all of the 34 dogs that took part in this experiment behaved in the same manner: they all didn’t run towards the container the third time. This proves that dogs can sense when someone is being untrustworthy and stop trusting them.

They can sense how people treat their owners

Another study published in Neuroscience and Biobehavioral Reviews shows that dogs can read how strangers communicate with their owners. During the experiment, researchers had dog owners ask two groups of strangers for some help. One group was told to agree while the other was supposed to rudely decline. By the end of the experiment, the researchers discovered something surprising about dogs again.

After the experiment, the strangers tried to offer the dogs some food. But the dogs refused to accept food from the strangers that had treated their owners badly. Instead of responding to them, they just ignored them. But they accepted to be fed by those strangers who treated their owners well and accepted to help. This experiment proved that dogs can interpret the way people interact with their owners and decide how to treat those people.
