Damini Ogulu, popularly known as “Burna Boy” is one of the hottest acts in the Nigerian Music scene right now. The award winning reggae dancehall singer and songwriter had a stellar 2018, culminating in him swooping up 4 awards at the 2019 Soundcity MVP awards held early last month.
He has continued on his hot streak this year, releasing some hit singles that are receiving massive airplay. As he continues to give us the hits, let’s see 5 facts about Burna boy:
- He is a Full-fledged South-South Boy
Even though he was born in Lagos, Burna Boy grew up in his home state, Rivers. He had his primary school education there before moving back to Lagos for his secondary school. He then went to the UK for his tertiary education.
- He Has Been Imprisoned Before
Burna has always been ‘cause trouble’. When he was schooling in the UK, he was arrested in 2010 for being part of a gang and stabbing someone to death. He was then tried as a minor and sent to jail. He was released on parole after 11 months.
- He has close ties to Fela Anikulapo Kuti.
I’m not surprised that Burna Boy has been giving us hit songs, It’s in his blood! Burna Boy was born to a mother who had once been a dancer for afrobeat icon, Fela. In addition to that, his uncle, Benson Idonije was Fela’s manager back in the 80s.
