Back in the days, iceboxes were used to keep food fresh and cold. These iceboxes were made of shelves packed with snow. However, a woman named Florence Parpart designed a way to pass electric through a circuit to keep a refrigerator cold. And the rest is story for the gods.

  1. Windshield Wipers

If you have ever driven or even entered a vehicle during a downpour, you’d know how important a windshield wiper is. This important part of a vehicle wasn’t thought of by a man though. It was invented by a woman named Mary Anderson in 1902. She was issued a patent on the invention in 1903, but her invention wasn’t recognized till years later. Regardless of that fact, we are still grateful to her for thinking up the windshield wiper.

  1. One Handed Syringe

Believe it or not, there was a time when syringes used to give medical doctors headaches. Previous model syringes were sorta cumbersome and needed two hands to operate. This was till Letitia Mumford Geer invented the one-handed syringe in 1896.

Popular actress, Hedy Lamarr wasn’t just talented on screen, she was hot upstairs too. The actress worked with a composer in inventing a secret communications system for radio-controlling torpedoes during the 2nd World War. Her invention was the foundation for the development of Wi-Fi as we know it today.

  1. Ice Cream Maker

Well, it had to be a lady to invent the Ice cream machine. This lady we have to thank for ice cream was called Nancy Johnson and she invented the Ice Cream Maker in 1843. Her model is still being followed till today in fact.

  1. Computer Programming

The computer as we know and love it today would not be what it is without this woman. Ada Lovelace was the very first computer programmer in the World. She wrote the first computer algorithm in 1842 while she worked with Charles Babbage. In fact, the first programming language is named after her.

Internet communication is possible through a protocol known as Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP). Without VOIP, there would be no form of communication over the internet like online calls, video conferencing, Skype calls, etc. and VIOP was invented by a woman named Marian Croak.

This modern security system was developed in line with the invention of the very first home security system. A woman named Marie Van Brittan Brown was tired of the slow response of police to house burgling and invented the world’s first video security system in 1969.

  1. Kevlar

In 1965, a woman named Staphanie Kwolek invented a material that is 5 times stronger than steel and yet not so heavy. This material is known as Kevlar and it is what is used in the production of the life-saving bulletproof vests today.
