9 Foods That Can Cause Constipation

Constipation is having less than 3 bowel moments per week or feeling difficulty in passing hard stools. If you include diet rich in fiber and increase fluid intake then there are very less chances that constipation will occur. But there are varieties of foods that may lead to constipation.

These 9 foods should be avoided to get rid of constipation:

Junk food:

It is one of the reasons that may lead to constipation as it contains salt and preservatives due to which body becomes dehydrated. In today’s busy lifestyle everyone has very less time for cooking. Especially when you find yourself in those Lagos traffic after finishing from work.

Most of the people prefer to store processed food in refrigerator. As and when they feel hungry, food is picked up from fridge and is eaten anytime. This food contains more salt, preservatives, sugar and less fiber. Canned Juices, packed food, pizzas, bread all these junk foods contain preservatives and high amount of sugar. So one should avoid junk food to get rid of constipation.

Unripe Bananas:

Unripe bananas contain resistant starch that is very hard for the body to easily digest. So if you want to avoid constipation, try to have ripe bananas instead of unripe bananas.

Gluten:

Gluten is a protein generally found in wheat, rye, barley. People, who have allergies to gluten, may have problem of constipation as they can’t digest food containing gluten.

Caffeine:

Caffeine generally leads to diarrhea but if person is dehydrated then it may lead to constipation also.

White Rice:

Husk, bran and germs are removed from white rice. These things are rich in fiber, so white rice may cause constipation. Prefer to eat brown rice as they contain bran and germs, so that doesn’t lead to constipation.

Red Meat:

Red meat contains high protein and high fat that is very difficult to digest by stomach. So one should not eat red meat to avoid constipation.

Alcohol:

Alcohol is also dehydrating and difficult to digest, so it may cause constipation. Avoid intake of alcohol as much as possible.

Chocolates:

Say no to chocolates if you are suffering from constipation. As chocolates are rich in fat, they are very difficult to digest. So avoid intake of chocolates to get rid of constipation.

Dairy Products:

Dairy products such as yogurt, cheese, ice cream contains lactose that cause bloating or gas in stomach. Person may feel uncomfortable if things are not moving properly. So it is one of the reasons of constipation.

The above mentioned foods may lead to constipation. Please try everything to avoid these foods. But if you face the constipation problem for more than a week, consult your doctor. As it may further lead to piles, fissure, fistula or hernia.
