9 facts About The English FA Cup

The English FA Cup saw its fifth round played over the weekend. The last match of the round was played last night with Manchester United knocking out holders, Chelsea with a 2 – 0 win at Stamford Bridge.

The quarterfinal stages of this year’s cup will now be played between Manchester United, Manchester City, Watford, Millwall, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Crystal Palace, Swansea City, and Brighton.

As we look forward to it, let’s check out 12 facts about this ancient competition:

  1. It is the World’s Oldest national football competition. Its first match was played in November 1871.

  2. Since its inauguration, Arsenal has won the title the most, lifting it 13 times.

  3. Portsmouth Football Club had the trophy in their cabinet for 7 straight years! Well its not because the won it back to back for 7 years though. Its just that they had just won the cup before the second world war broke out and another competition couldn’t hold till after 7 years.

  4. Leicester City is the only club to have played in four finals and lost every single time.

  5. The ribbons usually attached to the cup bear the colors of the last club to win the cup.

  6. Only Wigan have managed to win the Cup and get relegated from top flight football in the same year. This happened in 2013.

  7. Manchester United have now been responsible for knocking out holders of the cup 11 times. No other team has achieved this feat.

  8. The ball used in the FA cup finals have managed to burst on two occasions. The 1946 Cup final and 1947 final too.

  9. Ashley Cole is the only player to have won the Cup 7 times.
