What all these activities have in common is that they all improve cognitive function in one way or the other.

Maths

Yeah, we get it! The subject that gives many shudders and requires you to find “X” falls under this list. But there is every reason why Maths could make you smarter. It’s a highly practical subject. You learn by doing when solving math problems and the more problems you solve, the better you grasp mathematical concepts.

When you get better at solving math problems, you enhance your processing speed and increase the levels at which you can concentrate on tasks. Enhance Your Vocabulary
The ability to understand words and combine them to construct meaningful sentences is a high indicator of intelligence. Reading books is obviously one effective way one can get smarter. Unfortunately, many of us do not have the time  to sit down and read books due to a tight schedule. However, there is an alternative exercise you can use to help you express yourself better in words. It requires you to sit down and describe your immediate environment.

Look around you and come up with 5 different descriptions of the first object that catches your eye. Repeat this for another object. If you find that you have a word but you can’t express it in your description, consult a Thesaurus and write down all the synonyms of that word you can find. With time, you’ll get better at this exercise and you won’t be needing that Thesaurus so often. You can do this exercise for a few minutes every day.

Sports

For A long time we’ve know sports to benefit the body. Today, we know that they are also good for the brain. Playing sports can boost your focus, motor skills, concentration levels, focus, planning, memory, and other aspects of intelligence. In summary, sporting activities make you smarter and boost optimal brain performance.

 

Learning A New/Foreign Language

Most people who have learned a new language have pointed out how difficult it was. Despite this, they’ve also remarked on how much of a rewarding exercise it turned out to be. This is not surprising as challenging activities tend to boost brain power.

Learning a new language requires that you analyse syntax structure and memorise certain subject matter. New research has shown that learning foreign languages can help one see the world from different perspectives. A study has shown that regular meditation can physically change the shape and size of the brain. The study found that the grey matter in the brain of people who meditated for eight weeks was denser in areas associated with memory processing, learning, and emotion regulation. Seeing these benefits, it wouldn’t be a bad idea if you start practising meditation everyday. Therefore, set aside a time everyday when you can focus on your breath and observe your thoughts for a few minutes. And no, you don’t have to become an Asian monk!
