The human brain is the most important organ in the human body. It is also the most complex and the most powerful (let’s leave the heart first).
As such, keeping our brain healthy should be a significant part of our existence. However, some lifestyle choices can greatly threaten the health of our brain. There are some everyday habits that we indulge in that can prevent our brains from getting the important nutrients to stay healthy. The worst thing is that we may not even know that some of these habits can damage the brain.
We have compiled a list of 6 of these everyday habits that can damage the brain. Take a look:
- Not Getting Enough Sleep
Most working class people are guilty of this. Not getting enough sleep can make some neurons in the brain not function properly. You end up having dull reflexes and constant mental lapses. And when this sleep deprivation becomes regular, these unwanted effects become permanent and your brain becomes duller.
- Overeating
Yes, eating too much can lead to brain damage. How? See, overeating can cause obesity. Obesity in turn has been proven to have a major connection with dementia.
- Regularly Missing Breakfast
They say Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and it’s absolutely true. When you skip breakfast, you may end up having low blood sugar levels which is bad for the brain. The brain needs energy to function properly as it alone uses up about 20% of the total glucose in the body. When that glucose level is low, the brain ends up getting less energy for work and its cells gradually get damaged.
- Not Drinking Enough Water
Over 70% of our body is made up of water. That alone should tell you how important water is to the body, and the brain. Dehydration can rapidly cause loss of cognitive abilities as well as reduce coordination, and problem-solving abilities.
- Smoking
Smoking has a lot of disadvantages. One of which is brain damage. Several researches have shown that smoking damages neural viability in the parts of the brain that control balance and coordination. Smoking also damages cell membranes and thins the cortex that handles memory, perception and language retention.
- Taking Too Much Sugar
Although the human body needs sugar, taking too much of it can have negative effects, even on the brain. Regular intake of too much sugar can cause the brain cells to be in a constant state of chronic inflammation. This in turn could lead to reduced cognitive abilities, dementia and memory loss issues.
So those are the top 6 everyday habits that damage the brain. A lot of people are guilty of indulging in some of these habits, including yours truly. However, in the best interests of the brain, it is advisable to stop these habits. And if they cannot be avoided, just find ways to reduce how much you indulge in these habits.
Take care of your brain.
