Racism has been a serious issue for mankind in general. There have been several instances where lives have been lost to this ugly act. In most cases, racial acts are carried out against people of black (African) ancestry. As much as the world tries to fight it, racism still finds a way to rear its head in almost all parts of the world. And it is in football too. For years now, FIFA and other football governing bodies have spent millions of dollars to campaign against and create awareness on the negative effects of racism. And even though there has been some improvements in recent years, there are still sometimes that the world witnesses some shocking acts of Racism. One of those times came earlier this week in the Italian League. And this isn’t the first time we have seen racial behavior in football this season. Below is a list of 5 times players have faced racial abuse this season.
- Cagliari Fans Vs Moise Kean
The most recent occurrence of racism came on Tuesday night in the Italian League. Yung Juventus forward, Moise Kean was subject to racial abuse during their match away at Cagliari. The Cagliari supporters booed and hurled racial slurs at the young player (who is of African descent and therefore black) from the beginning of the match. However, the highlight came when Kean scored the second goal for the Old Lady. As he celebrated in front of the Cagliari supporters, monkey cants were heard from the stands. Much to the annoyance of his Juventus teammate. Blaise Matuidi. Matuidi was last year a victim of racial chants from fans at that same stadium. Kean was subjected to racial slurs even after the fact that he had recently played his debut match for the Italian National team – and he scored too.
- Montenegro Fans Vs England Players
The recently concluded international break saw England take on Montenegro away. Although the English men thumped their rivals by 5 goals to 1, the match was somewhat overshadowed by the racial behavior from the Montenegro fans. “Black” English players like Danny Rose, Raheem Sterling and Callum Hudson-Odoi were faced with racial slurs and chants from a section of the home fans. Rose especially suffered as he was the clear target of Monkey Chants when he was booked for a strong tackle on an opposition player.
- English Media Vs Tosin Adarabioyo
Last year December, the Engiash media was called out by Manchester City forward, Raheem Sterling for being racially prejudiced. His call-out came after a somewhat biased article was printed in one of the National dailies in England. Sterling had said that the media was being racist by their mode of publishing articles. This claim was made as a result of the actions of two Manchester City starlets. Tosin Adarabioyo and Phil Foden had both bought houses for their respective mothers. However, the headlines read differently for each player. For the ‘black’ Tosin, the headline was
“Young Manchester City footballer, 20, on £25,000 a week splashes out on mansion on market for £2.25million despite having never started a Premier League Match”
While for Foden, it read
“Foden Buys New £2m House For Mum”.
- Chelsea Fans Vs Sterling
Also in December last year, Raheem Sterling, a Manchester City’s forward was racially abused by a part of the home supporters at the Stamford Bridge. Sterling has since then taken up the fight against Racism.
- Inter Milan Vs Koulibaly
Back to the Italians. This also happened in December last year. Kalidou koulibaly, a Senegalese defender playing for Napoli was the recipient of continuous racial abuse in their match against Inter Milan. Inter were later sanctioned and punished for the stupid actions of some if its supporters.
We hope that we do not see any more of this ugly act this season. All of us here at Reterdeen proudly Say NO to racism.
