5 Reasons Why Real Madrid Will Go Trophyless This Season

Spanish giants, Real Madrid are having a torrid season. On Wednesday, they were humiliated 3-0 in front of home fans by bitter rivals, Barcelona, in the Spanish Cup semi-finals. The loss effectively kills any sure hope they had of getting their hands on silverware this season.

They have gone from being the envy of every European team – after winning a third UEFA Champions League trophy last season, to being the club needing controversial VAR calls to gain victory. As it stands, they are staring at their first trophyless season in 4 years right in the face, and these are 5 reasons why:

  1. Poor Performance

The fact is performances of the Los Blancos we have been seeing this season is quite poor compared to their previous seasons. Even back when they went trophyless in the 2014/15 season, they still put in a better performance than this.

  1. Defensive Woes

All areas of Real Madrid’s game have been inconsistent this season but their defence can be singled out for flogging. They have made poor defensive mistakes too many times this season. Although a lot of youngsters have been rotated with the first team squad, their captain, Sergio Ramos has not been his usual ‘defensive rock’ self this season.

  1. Inexperienced Coach

After the sack of Julen Lopetegui due to poor results earlier this season, Santiago Solari was taken as his replacement. However, unlike Zidane, Solari hasn’t found his feet running. The Argentine is still struggling to find the best team to use after abouth 3 months in charge. The team has also not gotten their rhythm as the coach is still yet to develop a particular playing sytle.

  1. Team Crisis

The Real Madrid team is also going through some crisis at the moment. Very recently, Gareth Bale refused to celebrate his goal with his teammates to show his unhappiness with the team. There are also reports of players like Isco, Dani Ceballos and Marcelo being unhappy with some even saying that Marcelo is pushing for a  reunion with former player, Cristiano Ronaldo at Juventus.

  1. They no longer have a CR7

There is no doubting the quality of the player known as CR7. The 5-time Balon’Dor winner plied his trade with the Spanish capital club for nine years, breaking several records and carrying his team to glory at impossible times. Unfortunately, Cristiano Ronaldo was allowed to leave the club during the last summer transfer window and now, Real Madrid are paying for that costly mistake.
