4 Memorable Moments From The Carabao Cup So Far

The English Football League Cup, called the Carabao Cup is a competition involving all the football teams in the English Football League (Championship, League One and League Two) and the Premier League.

The competition which started in 1960 was won by Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City last season and has been won most by Liverpool (8 times).

As Manchester City look to defend their title in the final match of this season’s competition against Chelsea com February 24, we have put together a list of 4 memorable moments of this season’s competition so far.

  1. Burton’s 10 – 0 Semifinal Thrashing

Manchester City thrashed League One side, Burton Albion, 10-0 over two semifinal legs to qualify for their second consecutive final match in two years. The incredible goal margin is one of the highest recorded in the history of the Carabao Cup semifinals. City trounced Burton in the first leg at the Etihad stadium, scoring 9 unanswered goals. They went on to seal the score line by a 0-1 win at Burton’s home stadium.

  1. Dele Alli’s Bottle Incident

After a 4-2 loss to Arsenal in the weekend’s Premier League fixture, Tottenham faced their North London rivals again in the mid-week Carabao Cup match. This time they recorded a 2-0 win with winger Dele Alli playing a starring part in the victory. However, there was an incident during the match involving Alli. The English player was struck by a bottle of water while standing in front of away fans. Dele then stunned the Arsenal fans when he epically replied by holding up his hands showing the 2-0 score line. His response shut up the noisy away fans much to the delight of the home fans.

  1. Defoe Given his Medal

10 years after Jermaine Defoe helped Tottenham on their way to win the 2007/08 trophy, he was handed his winner’s medal at his former club Bornemouth’s Vitality Stadium.

  1. Derby County Knocking Manchester United out

The competition’s third round knockout stage saw Frank Lampard’s Championship side, Derby County incredibly knockout Premier League giants Manchester United from the competition. After an exciting 2-2 draw in normal regulation time, they match went into penalties with Derby County coming out triumphant after the 15th penalty!
