10 Things you Should Know About DBANJ

Multi-award winning singer Oladapo Daniel Oyebanjo AKA D’banj needs little or no introduction in the Nigerian entertainment scene.

With several hits under his belt, Dbanj is one of the few acts who have found his way into the international music scene.

Here are 10 things you should know about him.

1. He was born on the 9th of June 1980 in Zaria, Nigeria. Dbanjs dad is a military officer and his mother hails from Shagamu in Ogun State.

2. He attended the Nigerian Military School at the age of 11 but completed his secondary education at the Nigerian Navy Secondary School in Ibara.

3. The singer is the first Nigerian United Nations Youth Ambassador for Peace. He is also the founder of the Koko Foundation for Youth and Peace Development.

4. D’banj bagged a degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Lagos.

5. He mentioned Fela Anikulapo Kuti, Kanye West, Micheal Jackson, Usher and Jay-Z amongst a few as some of his role models in music.

6. D’banj worked as a security guard in London before his music career started. He hit the limelight with his single “Tangolo” in 2004.

7. He won the Best Newcomer award at the 2006 Channel O Music Video Awards for his album “No Long Thing”.

8. D’banj and Don Jazzy launched Mo’Hits Records in 2007. He left Mo’Hits and launched his own label in DB Records in 2012 and went on to sign K Switch, Jaysleek and Deevee.

On what broke the Mo’Hits label, he said in an interview that:

What broke Mohits..Hmmn Difference of opinion..First of all it wasn’t me.We had traveled and left Donjazzy in New York with some of the management team because he had a production deal.We were trying to go global..I would love if you had the Truth from Jazzy too,it would have been better

I met Kanye west, but you all know I am a businessman.But there were two different deals.One he saw I was an artist,and he wanted to sign that artist.Then this artist said “I have a producer .We have the best thing coming from Africa…And he was sold.And then we flew to New York

On why Jazzy pulled out He saw the big picture but some people are real.You can force a horse to a river, but you can’t force it to drink water ..

9. D’banj bagged an endorsement deal with Globacom Nigeria alongside other brands like UAC Foods, Africa Union’s One Agric and Nigeria’s Bank of Industry.

10. He signed a deal with Kanye West’s G.O.O.D Music in 2011.
